President Harry S. Truman
President Harry S. Truman visited Key West, Florida frequently during his Administration. Dad took this picture just after he arrived at the Naval Base for his vacation.
Key West, Florida - November 7, 1948.

1940 Chevrolet Club Coupe
The girls were born in November 1947 at Lakehurst, New Jersey. Shortly after that Dad was transferred to a blimp squadron at Naval Air Station Boca Chica at Key West, Florida.

On January 15, 1948 Dad and family took off for Corsicana, Texas in our 1940 Chevrolet Club Coupe. He usually took leave and headed for Corsicana before reporting to his next assignment. Around 2:30 in the afternoon the next day, January 16th, right outside of Cookeville, Tennessee on Highway 70, coming down a steep hill that was iced over, the car slid into the ditch and turned over. No one was hurt and fortunately there was a farmhouse just up the hill. The people that lived there took us in for several days and helped with the girls who were just a few months old at the time.

According to Dad’s notes on the back of the picture, $289.38 for repairs.

Dorothy and Linda - 1948
Dorothy Burke Petty and Linda Petty, Key West, Florida. August 1948. Riley's in the back seat.

Our house in Key West, Florida - 1949
We lived in Navy housing while Dad was stationed in Key West. Our 1946 Ford, which Dad said was not a very reliable car, sits beside the house. The shutters are for hurricanes. The dark object at the front of the house is a small trailer that we used when moving. Directly in front of the front porch and beside the palm tree is a sand box that Dad had built for us kids. That’s Mom and the girls and a neighbor from across the street.
Key West, Florida - June 1949.
